Stevanato Group occupies an unusual dual position in the pharmaceutical packaging supply chain: it is simultaneously a pharmaceutical primary packaging manufacturer (glass vials, syringes) AND the manufacturer of the vial-forming machines that competitors use to convert glass tubing into vials. Through its Spami engineering subsidiary, Stevanato sells pharmaceutical glass converting machines to other packaging converters globally — including some converters who compete directly with Stevanato's glass packaging business. This means Stevanato both sells vaccines vials to Pfizer and sells the equipment that Pfizer's other vial suppliers use to make competing vials. The same Piombino Dese company that converts SCHOTT glass tubing into vials for the COVID-19 vaccine supply chain also equips other vial converters who competed for the same vaccine contracts. Stevanato Group was founded in 1949 in Piombino Dese, Veneto, by Giovanni Stevanato — building on the Venetian glass-making tradition of northeastern Italy (Murano glass, Venice, being the global reference for glass artisanship). Giovanni Stevanato began converting SCHOTT borosilicate glass tubing into pharmaceutical vials for Italy's postwar pharmaceutical industry, which was growing rapidly as Italian pharmaceutical companies (Farmitalia, Recordati) developed into major European players. The company remained family-controlled across three generations of the Stevanato family; its 2021 NYSE IPO (at a $4.6B valuation) was unusual for a third-generation Italian family industrial company. Stevanato's Piombino Dese campus — a major industrial site in the Veneto industrial triangle — became one of Europe's highest-capacity pharmaceutical glass converting facilities through continuous reinvestment under family control. The COVID-19 pandemic surge in vaccine vial demand (2020-2021) required Stevanato to expand capacity at unprecedented speed, validating the Fishers Indiana greenfield plant investment.
