SYENS.BRHQ BE · Brussels, Belgiumwebsite ↗

Specialty chemicals company spun off from Solvay SA on December 9, 2023; inherited Solvay's specialty chemicals portfolio including the Aroma Performance business unit (vanillin + hydroquinone). Self-described 'world's largest integrated producer of synthetic and natural vanillin.' Holds ~18% global vanillin market share. Filed 2024 US antidumping/countervailing duty petitions against Chinese vanillin imports. Announced intent to divest the Aroma Performance unit (no buyer named as of early 2026). Saint-Fons, France plant mothballed May 2024 due to Chinese competition; restarting late 2025 after EU imposed 131% anti-dumping duties on Chinese vanillin.

  • Incident2024

In May 2024, Syensqo mothballed its Saint-Fons, France vanillin plant — Europe's largest — due to 'inflation, declining demand, and intensified Asian competition.' In November 2024, the EU imposed 131% anti-dumping duties on Chinese vanillin. By late 2025, Syensqo announced the plant's restart, creating ~25 jobs. Within 18 months, a trade policy decision reversed a corporate mothballing decision at the world's second-largest vanillin producer. This plant closure-and-restart cycle illustrates how anti-dumping duties can structurally reshape an entire specialty chemical market — and how fragile Western vanillin capacity had become without tariff protection.

  • Origin2024

Solvay split into two independent publicly-traded companies on December 9, 2023: the original Solvay (keeping basic chemicals) and Syensqo (inheriting specialty polymers and solutions). Syensqo inherited the Udel® polysulfone brand, which has been the benchmark dialysis-grade polysulfone for over 25 years. In November 2024, Syensqo announced a 25%+ capacity expansion at its Marietta, Ohio facility to meet growing demand in dialysis, water filtration, and hydrogen electrolyzer applications. The Udel P-3500 LCD MB grade (low cyclic dimer, membrane-optimized) is the specific grade required for dialysis hollow fiber membrane spinning.
