Tereos was formed in 2004 through the merger of Béghin-Say (formerly Union SDA, one of France's largest agricultural cooperatives) with other regional French beet cooperatives. The name Tereos comes from Latin "terra" (earth) — a branding decision reflecting the cooperative's French farmer-owner identity. Béghin-Say itself had been formed in 1970 from a merger of Béghin (Nord-Pas-de-Calais beet sugar) and Say (Paris-based sugar refinery) — the same companies that competed for Napoleonic-era sugar beet market share after Napoleon's Continental Blockade forced France to develop domestic sugar from beet instead of colonial cane. Tereos's current structure (French beet sugar cooperatives + Brazilian cane sugar operations acquired through Guarani) represents the full sugar supply chain: Northern European beet and tropical South American cane under one cooperative roof.
