Producer
Tsingshan Holding Group
China's (and world's) largest stainless steel producer (private, HQ Wenzhou, Zhejiang); founded by Xiang Guangda ('Big Shot'). Transformed the global stainless industry by developing nickel pig iron (NPI) technology in Indonesia, producing stainless from laterite ores at ~$6,000/tonne vs. $15,000-20,000 for primary nickel — triggering a multi-year global nickel and stainless price collapse. Operates massive integrated stainless facilities in Sulawesi, Indonesia (Morowali Industrial Park) and Qingshan (China). CRITICAL INCIDENT: In March 2022, the LME (London Metal Exchange) suspended nickel trading and cancelled $3.9B worth of trades after prices doubled in hours from a short squeeze — Tsingshan had amassed a 150,000+ tonne LME nickel short position betting on its NPI cost advantage. The LME cancellation was the most controversial exchange action in decades.

Incident2022
In March 2022, the London Metal Exchange (LME) suspended nickel trading and cancelled approximately $3.9 billion worth of executed trades after nickel prices doubled in less than two hours — the most extreme and controversial exchange intervention in decades. The catalyst: Tsingshan Holding Group, the world's largest stainless steel producer, had amassed a massive short position (estimated 150,000+ tonnes) on LME nickel, betting that its nickel pig iron (NPI) production in Indonesia would keep prices suppressed. When nickel prices spiked (partly driven by Russia-Ukraine war disruptions to Norilsk Nickel supply), Tsingshan's short position faced margin calls that exceeded its cash reserves. The LME's decision to cancel trades — protecting Tsingshan — was challenged by hedge funds who had taken the other side of the trade, resulting in ongoing litigation. The same Chinese company that makes the most stainless steel in the world nearly caused a global commodities exchange meltdown.
Financial Times ↗Did you know2023
Tsingshan's Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park is simultaneously the world's largest stainless steel production complex (using NPI from laterite nickel) AND an emerging battery material supply hub (producing HPAL-processed battery-grade nickel for EV cathode materials). The same Indonesian mineral nickel deposit supplies raw material for stainless steel in home appliances AND battery cathode material for EV batteries -- with Tsingshan as the Chinese-controlled intermediate processor at both stages. A supply disruption at Morowali (flooding from Sulawesi seasonal rainfall, labor dispute with Indonesian government over worker conditions, or Indonesian policy change on Chinese-owned industrial parks) would simultaneously constrain global stainless steel flat supply (used in appliances, food equipment, construction) and global battery-grade nickel supply for EV cathode manufacturers. The home appliance industry and the EV battery industry share a Chinese-operated Indonesian industrial park as a common upstream processing bottleneck.
Tsingshan Holding Group ↗Origin2023
Tsingshan Holding Group was founded by Xiang Guangda (known as 'Big Shot' in Chinese business circles) in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, who started as a window and door manufacturing entrepreneur in the 1980s. Xiang pivoted to stainless steel in the late 1990s and built Tsingshan into China's largest stainless producer through relentless operational efficiency and cost reduction. The breakthrough was Xiang's development of nickel pig iron (NPI) technology: instead of using expensive primary nickel to make stainless steel, Tsingshan developed processes to smelt Indonesia's low-grade laterite nickel ore into NPI at approximately $6,000 per tonne of contained nickel -- dramatically below the $15,000-20,000 cost of primary nickel from traditional mines. The NPI innovation destroyed the economics of traditional nickel mining globally, collapsed nickel prices, and made Tsingshan the world's largest stainless producer. Xiang then built Morowali Industrial Park in Sulawesi, Indonesia -- a Chinese-owned industrial complex on Indonesian sovereign territory employing tens of thousands of Indonesian and Chinese workers -- as the primary production base for NPI and increasingly for battery-grade nickel for EV supply chains.
