voestalpine's spring steel wire rod from their Leoben-Donawitz facility — the chromium-silicon and chromium-vanadium steel grades that become automotive valve springs controlling engine combustion — is produced to the same material specifications used for military ordnance trigger and firing mechanism springs. The chromium-silicon spring steel (e.g., 54SiCr6, 60SiCr8) that operates under 300,000+ compression cycles in a car engine valve train is also the specified material for artillery fuze springs, rifle recoil springs, and precision trigger mechanism springs in military small arms. NATO STANAG specifications for small arms springs cite the same AISI/SAE and EN spring steel grades that voestalpine produces for the automotive OEM market. voestalpine's Donawitz wire rod facility, which supplies valve spring steel to BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Toyota engine plants across Europe and Asia, produces spring steel that simultaneously flows — through downstream wire drawing and spring forming — into automotive components and military equipment that rely on the same Austrian metallurgy for reliable performance.

  • Concentration2024

voestalpine Railway Systems is the world's single largest manufacturer of railway switches and crossings — the physical track infrastructure that allows trains to divert between tracks. They hold approximately 35% of the global installed base of high-speed and mainline railway switches, having supplied switch technology to every major European high-speed rail network (TGV, ICE, AVE, Eurostar, ÖBB), Australian intercity rail, and the US freight and Amtrak networks. A railway switch is a precision-manufactured steel casting and assembly that must withstand millions of axle passages under high dynamic load — there are only a handful of manufacturers globally (voestalpine, Schwihag/Cogifer, Vossloh, and regional players). voestalpine's Switch Systems division in Zeltweg, Austria holds the intellectual property for leading switch geometries and manufactures complete switch assemblies including their proprietary moveable nose crossing technology. European rail network expansion and the Fit-for-55 transport decarbonization drive make switch supply a strategic infrastructure bottleneck — and voestalpine is positioned as the dominant global source.

  • Origin2024

voestalpine AG is the successor to Austria's nationalized steel industry, created after World War II when the Allied Control Council placed Austria's major industrial assets under state control. The VOEST steelworks in Linz (Vereinigte Österreichische Eisen- und Stahlwerke — "United Austrian Iron and Steel Works") and the Alpine Montan Gesellschaft were merged in 1973 to form VOEST-Alpine AG, one of Europe's largest state-owned steel companies. VOEST-Alpine was notable for developing the LD (Linz-Donawitz) basic oxygen steelmaking process in 1952 — the dominant global steelmaking method that replaced open-hearth furnaces and now accounts for approximately 70% of world steel production. Austria, through VOEST engineers, gave the world the modern steelmaking process. Following Austria's debt crisis in the 1980s, VOEST-Alpine was progressively privatized; the renamed voestalpine completed full privatization in 2003 and transformed from a commodity steel producer into a specialty steel and technology company through strategic acquisitions of premium brands including Böhler tool steels and Uddeholm.
