Producer
Zhongke Sanhuan
Largest NdFeB permanent magnet producer in China and the world. State-affiliated; partly owned by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Revenue ~¥8B (2024). Produces ~30,000 MT/yr of sintered NdFeB magnets for EV motors, wind turbines, and consumer electronics. Pioneered the original Sanhuan process and holds key patents in China. Critical to Siemens Gamesa, Vestas, and most Chinese wind turbine OEMs.

Zhongke Sanhuan is partially owned by the Chinese Academy of Sciences — China's state research institution. This ownership structure means a commercial magnet manufacturer is directly tied to the Chinese government's strategic planning apparatus. When China announced its April 2025 rare earth export controls, Sanhuan had advance notice to stockpile critical Dy/Tb inputs. This is the same model as CNOOC (oil), CSSC (shipbuilding), and CATL (batteries) — strategic commodities in state-linked hands.
Zhongke Sanhuan High-Tech ↗Origin2023
Zhongke Sanhuan High-Tech Co. was founded in 1985 as a direct commercial spinout from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Institute of Physics, which had developed NdFeB permanent magnet technology parallel to Sumitomo Special Metals' patent in Japan. The CAS connection -- 'Zhongke' literally means China Academy of Sciences -- gives Zhongke Sanhuan an unusual ownership structure: it is a publicly traded company (Shenzhen: 000970) but with ongoing CAS institutional ownership, bridging state science policy and commercial manufacturing. The company pioneered the mass production of sintered NdFeB magnets in China, scaling from small laboratory runs in 1985 to 30,000+ MT/yr by the 2010s. Because CAS's research mission includes national technology development goals, Zhongke Sanhuan has been used as a vehicle for Chinese state policy on rare earth processing and permanent magnet technology standards -- commercial competitor to Japanese and Western magnet makers, but backed by the resources of China's top scientific research institution.
