Title 38 › Part II— GENERAL BENEFITS › Chapter 17— HOSPITAL, NURSING HOME, DOMICILIARY, AND MEDICAL CARE › Subchapter VIII— HEALTH CARE OF PERSONS OTHER THAN VETERANS › § 1787
Provide VA hospital and medical care to family members of the veterans named in the law who lived at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, for at least 30 days during the covered time, or who were unborn while their mother lived there. The VA will cover the illnesses listed in that law even if there is not enough medical proof that the illness came from living at Camp Lejeune. Care is only given if Congress has approved money for it in advance. The VA will not pay for an illness if, under rules set by the VA’s Under Secretary for Health, the illness is found to have another cause. The VA will pay back costs only after the person or provider has tried and failed to get payment from other responsible parties, including health plans or other third parties as defined by law.
