Title 42 › Chapter 23— DEVELOPMENT AND CONTROL OF ATOMIC ENERGY › Subchapter XVII— ENFORCEMENT OF CHAPTER › § 2272
Intentionally breaking certain federal rules, or blocking a lawful recapture or entry, is a crime. If convicted, a person can be fined up to $10,000, imprisoned up to 10 years, or both. If the act was done to hurt the United States or to help a foreign nation, the punishment can be life in prison, any term of years, a fine up to $20,000, or both. Breaking another specific rule about dangerous weapons carries heavier penalties. A violator can be fined up to $2,000,000 and must serve at least 25 years in prison or life. Using, trying to use, or threatening to use an atomic weapon in that crime brings a fine up to $2,000,000 and at least 30 years in prison or life. If the crime causes a death, the penalty is a fine up to $2,000,000 and life imprisonment.
