California Gets Green Light for Super-Strict Truck Pollution Rules

Published Date: 1/6/2025

Notice

Summary

The EPA just gave California the green light to enforce its new tough rules that cut pollution from big trucks, engines, and off-road diesel machines. This means cleaner air for everyone, but manufacturers will need to meet these stricter standards soon. If anyone wants to challenge this decision, they have until March 7, 2025, to speak up.

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

California may enforce 2024+ heavy-duty NOx rules

EPA granted California a waiver so California can enforce its Omnibus Low NOX regulations for new 2024 and subsequent model year on-road heavy‑duty vehicles and engines. The Omnibus program includes revised heavy‑duty emission standards, test procedures, regulatory useful life, and emissions warranty requirements that manufacturers and sellers in California must meet.

Off‑road diesel engine PM rules authorized

EPA authorized portions of California's Omnibus Low NOX program that apply to off‑road diesel engines, including new particulate matter (PM) emission standards for off‑road diesel‑fueled auxiliary power units. Makers and sellers of off‑road diesel engines and equipment used in California will be subject to these authorized standards.

EPA found California standards protective and feasible

EPA concluded that California's Omnibus Low NOX standards are, in the aggregate, at least as protective of public health and welfare as applicable Federal standards and found those standards technologically feasible within the available lead time. EPA therefore granted the requested waiver and authorization.
