TPS for El Salvador Extended 18 Months
The Secretary of Homeland Security extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for El Salvador for 18 months from March 10, 2025, through September 9, 2026. About 232,000 current El Salvador TPS beneficiaries are eligible to re-register and may remain and work in the U.S. during this extension if they continue to meet TPS requirements.
60-Day Re-Registration Requirement
Existing El Salvador TPS beneficiaries who want to keep TPS through September 9, 2026, must re-register during the 60-day re-registration period running January 17, 2025, through March 18, 2025. If you do not timely re-register, USCIS may withdraw your TPS after appropriate procedures.
Automatic EAD Extension through March 9, 2026
If you have an El Salvador TPS-based Employment Authorization Document (EAD) with category A12 or C19 and a "Card Expires" date of March 9, 2025; June 30, 2024; Dec. 31, 2022; Oct. 4, 2021; Jan. 4, 2021; Jan. 2, 2020; Sept. 9, 2019; or March 9, 2018, this Federal Register notice automatically extends that EAD through March 9, 2026 without further action. The extension applies regardless of your country of birth.
Up to 540-Day Automatic EAD Extension Option
If you properly file Form I-765 to renew an EAD during the re-registration period (January 17, 2025 through March 18, 2025) and the renewal is under category A12 or C19, you may get an automatic EAD extension of up to 540 days from your EAD's "Card Expires" date. Any automatic extension cannot be valid past September 9, 2026.
Employer Rules for Automatically Extended EADs
Employers must accept automatically extended EADs (A12 or C19 with the listed "Card Expires" dates) as valid List A Form I-9 documents and may not demand extra proof of Salvadoran citizenship or TPS registration. Employers must reverify employment authorization before the start of work on March 10, 2026, if relying on an automatic extension that ends March 9, 2026.
Fees and Fee Waiver for Re-Registration
To re-register for TPS you must submit Form I-821; there is no application fee for re-registration but you must pay the biometric services fee unless you request a fee waiver. Fee waiver requests use Form I-912 and certain filings with a fee waiver must be mailed rather than filed online.
