Notice

Summary

The U.S. is extending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ukrainians for 18 more months, from April 20, 2025, to October 19, 2026. Ukrainians already under TPS must re-register during a 60-day window to keep their protected status. This extension helps Ukrainians stay and work safely in the U.S. while their home country faces challenges.

Ukraine TPS Extended 18 Months

The Secretary is extending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ukraine for 18 months, from April 20, 2025 through October 19, 2026. About 103,700 current Ukraine TPS beneficiaries are eligible to re-register to keep TPS during this period.

60-Day Re-Registration Window

If you already have Ukraine TPS, you must re-register during the 60-day window from January 17, 2025 through March 18, 2025 to keep TPS through October 19, 2026. Failing to timely re-register may result in USCIS withdrawing your TPS.

Up to 540-Day EAD Extension If You File Now

If you file Form I-765 to renew your TPS-related EAD during the re-registration period (January 17, 2025 through March 18, 2025) and your application is in category A12 or C19, your EAD may be automatically extended for up to 540 days from the EAD's "Card Expires" date. Any automatic extension cannot extend past October 19, 2026.

Automatic EAD Extension through April 19, 2026

If your Ukraine TPS-based Employment Authorization Document (EAD) shows Category A12 or C19 and a "Card Expires" date of April 19, 2025 or October 19, 2023, this notice automatically extends that EAD through April 19, 2026 without any action. You may present that extended EAD to employers as proof of work authorization through April 19, 2026.

Fees: No I-821 Fee, But Biometrics Fee Required

To re-register for TPS you must submit Form I-821 and you do not need to pay the Form I-821 application fee, but you must pay the biometric services fee. If you cannot pay the biometric fee, you can request a fee waiver using Form I-912.

Pending TPS Applications Still Valid

If your Form I-821 or TPS-related Form I-765 was still pending on January 17, 2025, you do not need to file again; if USCIS approves the pending Form I-821 or I-765, USCIS will grant TPS or issue an EAD through October 19, 2026.

Employer I-9 Rules and Protections

Employers must accept automatically extended Ukraine TPS EADs (A12 or C19) as List A documents and may not demand additional proof such as evidence of Ukrainian citizenship or TPS registration. Employers must reverify employment authorization when the automatic extension ends (for example, by April 20, 2026 for FRN-based extensions).
