Affiliation with Tonawanda Band of Seneca

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has determined that the human remains and associated funerary objects described in this notice are culturally affiliated with the Tonawanda Band of Seneca. This determination is part of the inventory completed under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.

Two Remains and Seven Objects Eligible

The inventory found human remains of at least two Native American individuals and seven associated funerary objects (ground stone gorgets, a lithic flake, worked antler, a pipe stem, faunal remains, and a ceramic fragment). These items were donated by the Owens Family between 1992 and 2000 and were likely collected as early as 1962; they may be repatriated on or after February 18, 2025.

Who Can Request and How Requests Work

Repatriation requests may be submitted by any of the Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations identified in the notice, or by a lineal descendant or tribe/organization not identified that shows by a preponderance of the evidence a cultural affiliation. Send written requests to Thomas Roster, Refuge Manager, Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge, 1101 Casey Road, Basom, NY 14013; repatriation may occur on or after February 18, 2025. If competing requests arise, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will decide the most appropriate requestor; joint requests are treated as a single request.
