Sanctuary cities would return unused federal funds

This bill would require certain cities and counties to return unused federal money. It would apply when a locality has a law, policy, or practice that limits sharing a person’s citizenship or immigration status with any government, or blocks compliance with DHS detainer or release requests under INA sections 236 or 287. The rule would cover federal funds that were received but not obligated during those periods. It would reach back to funds received starting in the fifth full fiscal year before the Act takes effect, and it would not apply to money under subpart 1 of part E of title I of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968. A locality could pause the payback if it notifies the Attorney General and fixes the issue within 15 days.
