Rail companies, their officers, agents, receivers, trustees, lessees, lessors, and others involved must pay fines to the U.S. government if they knowingly break rules or orders from the Board that apply here. Most knowing violations can carry up to $5,000 per violation, and each day the problem continues counts as a separate violation. Breaking certain rules under section 11124(a)(2) or (b) is $500 per violation plus $25 per day. Letting violations of sections 10901–10906 happen can be up to $5,000. Disobeying orders under 11123 or 11124(a)(1) is $100–$500 per violation and $50 per day. Not keeping, preparing, or sending required records can be $500 per violation. Other failures to report or to answer questions fully and truthfully are $100 per violation. Civil cases to collect these fines can be filed where the carrier has its main operating office or where its railroad runs.
