Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 3 mixed.

Eligible Lands May Be Studied for Congress

Lands and waters found to possess wilderness characteristics will be formally studied to develop a recommendation to Congress for wilderness designation, and those studies will include analyses under the National Environmental Policy Act and the National Historic Preservation Act. Congress alone can designate wilderness areas.

NPS to Assess Six Parks

The National Park Service will evaluate previously unassessed lands in six parks (Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, Everglades National Park, Gulf Islands National Seashore, Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, Little River Canyon National Preserve, and Virgin Islands National Park). The assessments start January 7, 2025 and are expected to finish by January 7, 2026.

Public May Submit Information

Individuals, organizations, and agencies can send written information to the National Park Service to help identify lands that are eligible or ineligible for wilderness designation. The notice provides a contact address in Atlanta, GA and a phone and email contact for the Regional Wilderness Coordinator.

Ineligible Lands Continue Standard Management

If lands are determined to be ineligible for wilderness designation, the wilderness preservation provisions in NPS Management Policies 2006 will not apply to those lands. Those ineligible lands will continue to be managed under the NPS Organic Act and other applicable laws, executive orders, regulations, and policies.
