Exemption Lets Plant Keep and Load Eight Canisters

The NRC granted Constellation an exemption on December 20, 2024 allowing LaSalle County Station to keep four already-loaded MPC-68M-CBS canisters in storage and to load four additional MPC-68M-CBS canisters in a campaign beginning in June 2025, even though that basket design is not part of the approved Certificate of Compliance. This avoids having to unload and reload those canisters and helps the plant manage spent fuel pool capacity and scheduled refueling and loading activities.

NRC Finds No Significant Environmental or Radiation Impact

The NRC performed an environmental assessment and published a finding of no significant impact on December 20, 2024, concluding that keeping the four MPC-68M-CBS and loading four more beginning in June 2025 will not significantly change offsite radiological or non-radiological releases and will not significantly increase occupational or public radiation exposure. The NRC also concluded the exemption will not endanger life, property, or common defense and security.
