FERC Seeks Comments on New Mexico-Texas Gas Project

Published Date: 7/13/2026

Notice

Summary

Northern Natural Gas Company wants to expand its gas facilities in parts of New Mexico and Texas, and the government is asking the public to share their thoughts on how this might affect the environment. People living nearby and anyone who cares about nature can comment until August 10, 2026. This feedback will help decide if the project moves forward and how to protect the environment during construction and operation.

Analyzed Economic Effects

5 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 3 costs, 0 mixed.

Landowners: Easement Negotiations and Eminent Domain

If you are a landowner near the proposed route, the pipeline company may contact you to negotiate an easement to construct, operate, and maintain the facilities. You are not required to agree, but if FERC approves the project the Natural Gas Act conveys eminent domain authority to the company and it could initiate condemnation proceedings in court; compensation would be determined by a judge under state law.

Construction Disturbs 355.7 Acres; 110.1 Acres Permanent

Construction would disturb about 355.7 acres of land and the project would permanently maintain about 110.1 acres for operation. The environmental review will evaluate effects on geology and soils, water resources and wetlands, vegetation and wildlife, threatened and endangered species, cultural resources, socioeconomics, land use, air quality and noise, and reliability and safety.

New Compressor Station and Above‑Ground Facilities

The project would add a new compressor station with one 7,700-horsepower natural gas-fired compressor unit, two pig launchers, and related aboveground equipment as part of about 16.2 miles of pipeline. The environmental review will consider air quality and noise impacts from these aboveground facilities.

Public Scoping Comments Due August 10, 2026

You can submit written comments on environmental issues, reasonable alternatives, and measures to reduce impacts so they are received by FERC in Washington, DC by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on August 10, 2026. Comments may be filed via FERC's eComment, eFiling (docket CP26-534-000), or by mail.

Historic Properties: Section 106 Consultation Initiated

FERC is initiating Section 106 consultation under the National Historic Preservation Act with the applicable State Historic Preservation Offices, interested Indian tribes, and other parties to solicit views on potential effects to historic properties; the environmental document will document findings and summarize consultation status.
