Temporary river flow variance Oct 1–Feb 28

Duke Energy requested a temporary variance from the 80 cubic feet per second (cfs) minimum continuous flow at the Lookout Shoals hydro project on the Catawba River from October 1, 2026 through February 28, 2027. During repairs they would provide flow by pulsing a larger unit (one hour on, three hours off minimum) or, if water is available, run a larger unit continuously at about 1,050 cfs. The company consulted state and federal resource agencies, and those agencies agreed to the pulse flow strategy and indicated no negative environmental effects are expected.
