Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

Bullion spouse coins and bronze medals

This bill would require the Treasury to issue bullion $1 coins emblematic of the spouse of each deceased President honored under the presidential coin rule. The spouse coins would have the same specifications and inscriptions as existing bullion $1 coins and would be issued within the same three-year window after the President's death. If a President had no spouse during a term, the Treasury would not be required to issue a spouse coin. The Treasury could decide quantities and sell uncirculated or proof coins and could strike and sell bronze medals with the same likeness. These coins and medals would be legal tender and treated as numismatic items.

New $1 coins for deceased Presidents

This bill would require the Treasury to mint $1 coins honoring U.S. Presidents who die and who were not already honored with a $1 coin. For each deceased President, the Treasury would first issue that coin within three years after the President's death. The coin obverse and reverse would follow specified design rules and be legal tender. The Treasury could decide how many to make and whether to sell uncirculated or proof versions. These coins would be treated as collector (numismatic) items for certain sales and handling rules.
