Starting January 1, 2027, Alaska joins the Social Work Licensure Compact. Your Home State can issue one Multistate License so you can practice in other member states. The multistate system runs once at least seven states enact the Compact. To qualify, meet your category’s degree and exam rules. Clinical level needs a master’s plus 3,000 supervised hours or two years. You must keep an active, unencumbered Home State license, pay fees, give fingerprints, report adverse actions within 30 days, and follow Remote State laws.
Starting January 1, 2027, your Home State handles discipline on your Multistate License. A Remote State can limit your authorization only for practice in that state. If your Home State license is encumbered, your remote authorizations turn off until fixed. The Commission runs a shared Data System with your license, denials, and adverse actions. States must report into the system, and each multistate applicant gets a unique ID.
Starting January 1, 2027, a valid Compact authorization counts as a license to practice in Alaska. You may use protected titles like L.C.S.W., L.M.S.W., and L.B.S.W. under that authorization. Practicing or using protected titles without a license or authorization remains a class B misdemeanor. The law adds definitions and cross-references for multistate licensure. Some sections no longer apply to regulated social worker applicants.
Starting January 1, 2027, the Compact Commission can charge a fee to people who hold a Multistate License. It also bills member states each year. The Commission sets amounts and formulas by rule.
Starting January 1, 2027, if you move between member states, apply right away for reissuance in your new Home State. You may need to pay fees, complete a jurisprudence step, and give fingerprints. Your old multistate license turns off when the new one is issued. Active-duty members and spouses can keep one Home State while on active duty.
Starting January 1, 2027, a new interstate commission runs the Compact. It can adopt binding rules, keep records and a data system, and enforce the Compact. Courts can review commission rules. Alaska’s board adopts regulations and appoints a state delegate. A state can withdraw, but not until 180 days after passing a repeal law.
