Commercial fishing co-ops can self-insure

The law exempts certain fishing risk pools from state insurance rules. Two or more people in commercial fishing can sign a cooperative deal to pool money. The pool can pay liability claims against a member’s fishing business. It can also pay for loss of or damage to a vessel or machine a member owns or leases for the business. State insurance regulation does not apply to these pools. The law sets no extra rules or end date.
