Free online civics lessons from state

Beginning July 1, 2027, the State Board posts and updates free civics materials online. Schools and students can use these open resources for lessons, tests, and projects. Topics include founding documents, federalism, branches of government, rights and liberties, the Alaska and U.S. Constitutions, parties and elections, Congress, domestic and foreign policy, international relations, global systems (including Alaska Native governance), and major issues facing governments.

Seal of civic readiness on diplomas

Beginning July 1, 2027, the Department recognizes students with strong civics by adding a Seal of Civic Readiness to transcripts and diplomas. The seal marks high civic knowledge, skills, mindset, and experiences.

Civics required to earn a diploma

Beginning July 1, 2027, students who enter 9th grade must meet a civics requirement to graduate. Schools must teach the listed civics topics, and students must pass a one‑semester civics course, a civics test, or a civics project. A passing score is 70% or higher on the course, test, or project. Schools must note a passing result on the transcript, and students may retake the civics test until they pass. A school may still issue a diploma if the student transferred to Alaska after grade 10 from another state, proved equivalent civics work within the last five years, or received a disability waiver.
