Medicaid steps to cover complex care homes

Beginning July 1, 2027, the Department of Health must seek Medicaid plan changes or waivers from federal officials. This lets Medicaid align coverage, billing, or payment rules with the new complex care home category. It does not itself change who is on Medicaid or payment amounts until federal approval happens.

New rules for complex care homes

Beginning July 1, 2027, Alaska sets clear rules for complex care residential homes. These homes must be licensed and inspected by the Department of Health. The law defines them as 24-hour residential care for people with medical, behavioral, or disability needs. The homes are not treated as hospitals or assisted living homes. This brings clearer protections and oversight for residents and families.
