Medicaid steps to cover complex care homes

Beginning July 1, 2027, the Alaska Department of Health must seek federal approval to change Alaska Medicaid. The goal is to cover services in complex care residential homes. After federal approval, Medicaid can cover these services. That can lower your out-of-pocket costs if you need 24-hour complex care.

New oversight for complex care homes

Beginning July 1, 2027, the Alaska Department of Health regulates complex care residential homes. These homes provide 24-hour, team-based care for people with mental, behavioral, medical, or disability-related needs. They are not assisted living homes and not hospitals, and follow their own licensing and staffing rules. Stronger oversight can improve safety and clarity, but compliance costs may raise prices for residents.
