New rules for Alaska city councils

The law updates how Alaska city councils are set up. First-class cities have six council members, elected at large. Second-class cities with more than 1,000 people have seven, elected at large. Second-class cities with 1,000 or fewer people set the size by ordinance, between three and seven, elected at large. A first- or second-class city can switch to a non-at-large election method for all members by ordinance. The law takes effect immediately.

School board terms and elections change

Municipal school board members are elected at the regular election for three-year terms. They serve until their successors take office. Members are elected at large unless voters at a regular election approve a different method. A municipality’s governing body can change certain education-law term rules by ordinance. For the school board term rules set in this law, any change by ordinance must be approved by local voters. Existing exceptions in law still apply. The law takes effect immediately.
