New permit area for east Cook Inlet

Beginning January 1, 2027, the Alaska Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission creates a separate set net permit area on the east side of Cook Inlet. It covers statistical areas 244-21, 244-22, 244-31, 244-32, 244-41, and 244-42 in the Upper Subdistrict. This new area uses its own entry permits for the set net fishery. Your old Cook Inlet permit does not automatically let you fish there. You can fish there only if the Commission reassigns your permit.

Set-net permit reassignment for east Cook Inlet

On January 1, 2027, holders of Cook Inlet set net permits can seek reassignment to the new east-side area. To be reassigned, you must show you fished in areas 244-21, 244-22, 244-31, 244-32, 244-41, or 244-42 during the five years before December 31, 2024. Proof satisfactory to the Commission can include a shore fisheries lease, area registration, a buoy tag, or prior fishing statistics. If you got the permit from an immediate family member, their participation can count. Immediate family includes a spouse or partner, your children, parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts or uncles, and your spouse’s parent or sibling.

Appeal rights for Cook Inlet set-netters

You may appeal the Commission’s permit assignment decision to the superior court by March 1, 2027. While your appeal is pending, the Commission issues you a provisional entry permit for the new area. This lets you keep fishing there during the appeal.
