Cook Inlet set net area split

Beginning January 1, 2027, the law creates a separate east‑side Cook Inlet set net area. It covers statistical areas 244-21, 244-22, 244-31, 244-32, 244-41, and 244-42 as they existed on January 1, 2024. A prior Cook Inlet entry permit does not let you fish there unless the commission reassigns it. On January 1, 2027, permits are renewed to the Cook Inlet set net area unless you or an immediate family member show fishing in those listed areas within the five years before December 31, 2024. Acceptable proof includes a shore fisheries lease, area registration, buoy tag, or prior fishing statistics. If you provide that proof, the commission must reassign your permit to the new east‑side area. Immediate family includes a spouse or cohabiting partner; children; parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, or uncles; and a spouse’s parent or sibling.

Appeal right and provisional permit

You can appeal if the commission renews your permit under the old Cook Inlet area instead of the new east‑side area. File in superior court by March 1, 2027. While the appeal is pending, the commission must give you a provisional permit for the new area so you can keep fishing. This process starts January 1, 2027.
