Beginning October 1, 2025, Alabama ends an insurance exemption for out-of-state vehicles not legally required to register in Alabama. Covered vehicles need liability insurance, a commercial auto policy, a motor vehicle liability bond, or a cash deposit. The policy, bond, or deposit must meet the laws of the state where the vehicle is registered. Other vehicle exemptions remain in place. Drivers can show proof of qualifying insurance.
