Alabama students must learn peaceful conflict skills
Starting in the 2027–2028 school year, Alabama public school students must complete a violence prevention, conflict resolution, and mediation course or program before high school graduation. Schools must provide this instruction in grades 6–12. Lessons must cover responsible decisions, school violence and harassment, cultural diversity, and the causes and consequences of violent behavior. They must also cover peaceful conflict resolution, links between drugs, alcohol, and violence, voluntary peer mediation, and classroom conflict-resolution models. Before June 30, 2027, the State Department of Education must make teaching materials, models, and curricula available to local boards. Local boards choose the curriculum, and the department must help train teachers. The State Board of Education must adopt needed rules. The law takes effect October 1, 2026, and includes no explicit funding.
