New rounding rules for cash buyers

When a seller does not have or use one-cent coins, the law requires cash totals to be rounded to the nearest five cents. Totals ending in 1, 2, 6, or 7 cents go down; totals ending in 3, 4, 8, or 9 cents go up. Totals ending in 0 or 5 cents stay the same, and this rule does not apply to noncash payments. Sellers must post a notice and cannot use another rounding method. Taxes and fees are calculated from the amount before rounding. The state weights and measures division can issue warnings and orders and impose civil penalties for violations.
