Colorado seeks simpler Medicaid renewal checks

By July 1, 2028, Colorado’s Medicaid department must seek federal approval for simpler renewal checks. One change skips electronic checks and extra proof for members with only Social Security or other stable income or assets. The department must consult members and advocacy groups to identify stable sources, including assets expected to lose value. It must assume those sources have not changed without requiring those checks. Another change skips extra proof when income or assets remain unchanged since application checks, or as federal approval allows. These simpler renewal processes depend on federal approval.

Less paperwork for Medicaid long-term care

By December 31, 2026, Colorado’s Medicaid department must reduce medical questions on the form used to assess long-term care needs. Any treating licensed medical professional allowed under state rules can complete and sign it, with a genuine treatment relationship. The department must check financial eligibility and care needs at the same time during renewal. It cannot require new medical documentation just because a member moves between institutional care and home- or community-based care.
