Local governments get new cybersecurity support

Beginning July 1, 2026, the Florida Digital Service runs the Local Government Cybersecurity Protection Program to help fight threats, including ransomware. Grants provide technology and services—not cash—to help eligible local governments build or improve cybersecurity programs. Awards follow objective eligibility and review standards, with preference for counties designated as fiscally constrained under state law. Grants must be awarded by December 1 each year. Local governments can also buy through program contracts without applying for or receiving grants, but must pay all purchase costs. The agency must enter data-sharing agreements with local governments when needed to detect, prevent, and respond to cyber incidents. It can accept federal funding for the program; the law states no specific funding amount. Starting December 15, 2027, annual reports to state budget officials must cover the prior fiscal year's applications, awards, recipients, funded technology and services, and federal and other funding used. The program ends July 1, 2031, unless the Legislature renews it.
