Free search devices for special needs participants

Beginning July 1, 2026, Florida revives Project Leo to help find people with special needs who wander away. Centers for Autism and Related Disabilities choose whether to join and set eligibility rules that must include wandering risk. Participants are selected first-come, first-served, within each center’s available funding and existing resources. Participation is voluntary and free. Centers supply personal search devices to participating county sheriffs, who distribute them with the centers; centers pay monitoring costs. For fiscal year 2026-2027, the law provides $1 million in one-time funding from the state’s General Revenue Fund. The centers at the University of Florida, Florida Atlantic University, University of South Florida, and Florida State University each receive $250,000. This money can only buy search devices, and the law sets no program expiration date.
