Lee County voters decide fire district merger

The law requires a November 3, 2026 vote on merging Fort Myers Beach’s fire district into Iona-McGregor. The merger takes effect only with majority approval from voters casting ballots in each district. Lee County’s Supervisor of Elections runs the YES/NO vote alongside the general election; the referendum rules are already effective. The expanded district includes San Carlos Island, Estero Island, and specified surrounding lands, excluding portions within the City of Fort Myers. The added Section 7 land excludes the portion north of the old railroad grade. Upon approval, Fort Myers Beach’s separate district laws are repealed, and Iona-McGregor receives all its assets and debts, including pension obligations. The temporary board has five existing Iona-McGregor commissioners and two Fort Myers Beach members elected under the prior district law. This board serves until the next general election, when the two added members’ terms end in 2028.
