Hillsborough voters decide how to choose superintendent

The law requires a referendum for qualified Hillsborough County voters at the 2026 general election. A majority of those voting on the referendum must approve the change. With approval, voters elect the Hillsborough County Public Schools superintendent in a partisan election, replacing School Board appointment. Elections begin with the 2028 general election, and the superintendent serves a four-year term. The law creates no direct household payment or benefit.
