Online local payments, with possible extra fees

Beginning January 1, 2027, Florida local governments must accept credit cards, charge cards, bank debit cards, and electronic funds transfers. They must also offer online payment for these amounts owed, except when the law requires another payment method. Covered governments include cities, counties, special districts, and consolidated or metropolitan governments. The rule also covers relevant county clerks, sheriffs, property appraisers, tax collectors, and election supervisors. Local governments can add a surcharge sufficient to cover processing fees for taxes, licenses, tuition, fines, and other legally required payments. They must check that the card or transfer is valid and that sufficient credit exists. The law shields local governments from liability for those checks and subsequent actions.
