New payments for landlords housing veterans

Beginning July 1, 2026, Florida creates a landlord payment pilot in Broward, Escambia, Hillsborough, and Santa Rosa Counties. It serves landlords renting to eligible veterans in HUD-VASH, a federal rental assistance and case management program. Landlords can get proportional rent for holding an available unit for a participating veteran. Payments cover up to 45 days after availability, ending sooner if the veteran moves in. Landlords must submit documents to the contracted program administrator within 60 days after move-in. Landlords who previously applied for this rent support can also seek up to $2,000 for veteran-caused property loss beyond the deposit. The veteran must leave within the first 12 months of a year-to-year lease or after a rental agreement expires. Loss claims are due within 60 days after move-out, with a move-out checklist, current photos, and legally required written notice. Payments depend on yearly state funding and are first-come, first-served; applications can stop when funds are fully committed. The Florida Housing Finance Corporation sets payment rules and oversees the pilot, while contracted administrators keep records and verify claims. Veterans' case managers help with funding requests and required documents.
