The Hawaii Employees’ Retirement System starts required payments by the federal required beginning date, even when a member or former member has not applied. Late service retirement payments are paid back to that date with regular interest. If no written benefit choice arrives by the later deadline—the required beginning date or 60 days after notice—the system chooses a default: the maximum allowance for an unmarried person, or a survivor option for a married person or someone with a reciprocal beneficiary. When current relationship information is missing, the law uses statutory assumptions, including assuming a spouse is 40 years younger in a specified case.
