For deaths or taxable transfers after December 31, 2024, Hawaii uses the federal estate and generation-skipping transfer tax code as amended through December 31, 2024. Hawaii exceptions and limits still apply. The law does not state whether estates will pay more or less tax.
For tax years starting after December 31, 2024, Hawaii uses the federal income tax code as amended through December 31, 2024, with Hawaii exceptions. Certain federal rules for pandemic aid, charitable gifts, health and dependent care accounts, disaster relief, and retirement plans apply in Hawaii. Recovery rebates from 2020 and 2021 stay out of Hawaii gross income. The retirement withdrawal rule applies to tax years starting after December 31, 2019; prior law still controls certain earlier tax years and property basis.
