Idaho livestock owners can receive payments for grizzly bear or wolf losses judged possible, not just confirmed or probable. Confirmed claims are paid first, then probable claims, then possible claims, using money left at each step. When money cannot cover a claim group in full, owners in that group share it proportionally. Payments use current fair market value set by the Idaho Department of Agriculture, minus other compensation for the same losses. Owners must submit claims to the Office of Species Conservation by December 31 each year. Beginning July 1, 2024, the law requires $225,000 annually: $150,000 for confirmed claims and $75,000 for prevention and proven deterrents. Unused claim money carries into the next calendar year, interest stays in the fund, and the fund cannot exceed $400,000. Covered livestock include cattle, sheep, goats, swine, poultry, bees, llamas, equine animals, domesticated game, and other qualifying nonplant life; aquatic animals are excluded. The Department of Agriculture administers the program and sets rules in coordination with wildlife agencies. The law took effect upon passage and approval.
