Seed commission drops member income requirement

Beginning July 1, 2025, growers and dealers no longer need substantial seed-business income to serve on Idaho’s seed commission. They must remain Idaho citizens and residents actively growing or dealing in alfalfa or clover seed in Idaho. The seven seats cover five growers, one dealer, and one University of Idaho College of Agricultural and Life Sciences representative.

Idaho seed growers face higher assessments

Beginning July 1, 2025, the clean alfalfa and clover seed assessment rises from one-fourth cent to 1 cent per pound. It covers seed grown annually in Idaho and seed sold as Idaho alfalfa or clover seed. The money supports seed research, market promotion, advertising, and related program work. Any commission-approved increase requires an investigation finding revenue inadequate, a report to Idaho’s agriculture director, and the director’s favorable finding. The report must explain industry needs, research and promotion costs, public need, and expected revenue. The total assessment cannot exceed 1 cent per pound.
