State plate sponsors face fewer requirements

Sponsors of new plates benefiting Idaho or its agencies need not certify that proceeds go to the highway distribution account. This exemption includes plates benefiting Idaho colleges and universities. Plates benefiting Idaho or its agencies are also exempt from annual sponsor reports. Their sales are not discontinued for missing those reports.

Drivers get potato plates with fees

Beginning July 1, 2025, owners of eligible Idaho-registered vehicles can apply for black-and-white World Famous Idaho Potatoes plates. Department approval is required, and vehicles with a registered maximum gross weight above 26,000 pounds are excluded. The plates cost $70 initially and $50 each year to renew, plus regular registration fees. The State Highway Account receives $45 initially and $35 per renewal; the Idaho Potato Commission receives $25 and $15. Sample plates cost $30 each, with $10 going to the highway account and $20 to the commission. Personalizing a sample plate costs nothing extra.
