Easier proof for out-of-state car titles

Beginning July 1, 2026, owners bringing a vehicle from another state can show more kinds of proof. You may use the other state's title, a bill of sale, an electronic motor vehicle record, or other proof that state requires. This only applies when the current title was issued outside Idaho.

Faster lien release after dealer payoff

Beginning July 1, 2026, lienholders must move faster after a dealer pays off your loan. They must tell the department within 10 business days after receiving verified funds. If they hold the paper title and have your authorization, they must send it to the dealer within 10 business days. They must also mark the lien as canceled on the paper title.

Online title filing and 45-day permits

Beginning July 1, 2026, the department accepts title documents online. Your authenticated e-signature counts the same as ink. Approved electronic vendors can file your title and send fees to the state. When a dealer files your application by an approved electronic method, you get a 45-day permit to drive without plates. Without approved electronic filing, the permit lasts 72 hours.
