Hunters face seasonal limits on scouting technology
Beginning July 1, 2026, Idaho law sets seasonal limits on hunting and scouting technology. Each year, from August 30 through December 31, the limits apply on federal, state, and local government land in Idaho. People cannot use thermal imaging, night vision, drones, or transmitting trail cameras to hunt or scout big game or game birds. Exceptions cover hunting wolves, mountain lions, or predatory wildlife; retrieving wounded game; monitoring traps; and monitoring buildings or personal property to deter theft. Owners, authorized representatives, lessees, and federal or state agencies can also use these tools to monitor, prevent, or control damage to livestock, other domestic animals, or crops.
