Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

County canvass deadline one day sooner

Beginning July 1, 2026, county boards must finish the election canvass within nine days after election day. The old deadline was ten days, so results are certified sooner.

Mail-ballot precincts: free postage, party choice

Beginning July 1, 2026, county clerks mail a ballot to every voter in mail-ballot precincts and pay the return postage. Clerks must send ballots no earlier than 45 days and no later than 11 days before election day. If you are unaffiliated, the clerk mails a form so you can pick which party’s primary ballot you get. If you do not pick, or no party allows unaffiliated voters, you get a nonpartisan ballot.

Conservation district elections shift to odd years

Beginning July 1, 2026, elections for soil and water conservation district supervisors are held in odd-numbered years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The election set for November 2026 moves to November 2027, and the 2028 election moves to November 2029. Winners of those moved elections serve four-year terms.
