New appeals for Idaho wildlife damage

Beginning July 1, 2025, Idaho provides an appeal when an initial investigation cannot confirm wildlife caused a loss. Covered animals are grizzly bears, black bears, mountain lions, and wolves. Investigators must give affected people written notice of their appeal right. The Office of Species Conservation receives appeals and coordinates board meetings. The three-member board includes the state agriculture and fish and game directors, or their designees, and a governor-appointed large-animal veterinarian. It serves only as an appeal body, not as the initial investigator. The board can review testimony, investigation reports, tracking data, photos, videos, past incidents, and expert analysis. It can also consider hunting and trapping reports from the past six months. A majority vote can change the finding; the decision is final and binding for compensation. Confirmed findings also count toward official wildlife damage incident totals. For compensation claims under the covered program, qualifying physical damage must total at least $1,000 per occurrence. Covered property includes specified livestock on public, state, or private land, or specified berries, bees, beehives, or honey on private land.

Idaho wildlife board can meet privately

Beginning July 1, 2025, Idaho's wildlife damage appeals board is exempt from state open-meeting requirements. The board does not have to open its meetings to the public. This exemption concerns meeting access, not the board's appeal or compensation rules.
