False emergency reports bring criminal penalties

Beginning July 1, 2025, Idaho sets criminal penalties for knowingly false bomb and emergency reports, including causing someone else to report. These rules cover reports to listed recipients: police, prosecutors, emergency dispatchers, fire services, news outlets and reporters, building occupants, and school district employees. They also cover reports to airline, airport, railroad, bus line, and telephone company employees. Falsely reporting a bomb or other explosive placed or hidden in a public or private place is a felony carrying up to five years in prison. Other false emergency reports are misdemeanors carrying up to one year in prison, a $5,000 fine, or both. Those reports become felonies if they cause more than $1,000 in damage, great bodily harm, permanent disfigurement, or permanent disability. That penalty is up to five years in prison, a $25,000 fine, or both. If the violation causes a death, penalties reach ten years in prison and a $25,000 fine. Private places include homes and surrounding grounds, workplaces, vehicles, and other locations where the law protects a person's privacy.
