Veterans home residents face new property rules

Beginning July 1, 2025, admission to an Idaho veterans home is a binding contract that includes property-transfer rules. Applicants must agree before admission, and application forms must explain the rules and record their consent. When residents die while still members, financial assets not covered by a will go to Idaho’s unclaimed property division within one year. This applies only when they leave no legal heirs or next of kin, and includes money and financial claims from pensions or other sources. Residents can instead direct in writing that these assets go to the Division of Veterans Services after death. The division needs a death certificate to accept the donation. Physical belongings unclaimed for 30 days after death or discharge go to the veterans home, outside the state’s unclaimed property law. The amendment removes the stated five-year period for heirs or people named in a will to reclaim property.
