AI learning guidance for Idaho families

Beginning July 1, 2026, Idaho's education department must develop and recommend K-12 AI learning standards to the State Board. These must cover how generative AI works, age-appropriate uses, and ethical, secure, and open use. The department must also recommend ways to assess student understanding and a plan to train educators. Educators, industry partners, and technology experts must be consulted. The department must create a separate guidance document to help parents and legal guardians understand AI in public education.

New safeguards for Idaho school AI

Beginning July 1, 2026, Idaho's education department must create and update a public K-12 generative AI framework with State Board approval. It must address safety, transparency, data security, accessibility, learning needs, and access to tools, with human judgment remaining the final authority. Educators, industry partners, and workforce representatives must help with updates. Every district and public charter school must adopt matching rules for student and staff use at school, during school activities, and on school-issued devices. These rules must define allowed and banned uses for teaching, administration, and communication, while protecting privacy, accessibility, and honest schoolwork. They must follow state and federal privacy and child internet safety laws; State Board implementation rules require legislative approval.

Privacy safeguards for Idaho school AI purchases

Beginning July 1, 2026, generative AI tools bought by Idaho districts and public charter schools must meet privacy requirements. These include state laws and federal student privacy, child internet safety, and children's online privacy laws. Vendors must disclose whether products use machine learning, predictive analytics, or generative AI. They must give assurances about data protection, transparency about how their systems work, and responsible use. Idaho's education department may create an approved-tool list or model buying guidelines, but neither is required.
