Death investigation photos protected, family access limited

Beginning July 1, 2026, Idaho exempts photos and images of deceased people taken during coroner or law enforcement investigations from public disclosure. This protection applies even when the investigation is no longer active. Agencies may release the images upon request to the closest living relative, but only after all related proceedings are inactive. These include coroner and police investigations, the criminal case, all appeals, and related civil proceedings. Relatives qualify in this order: spouse, adult children, parents, siblings, then grandparents.
